Abstract/Summary This paper interrogates the materiality of homelessness by undertaking a reflective analysis of the physical and metaphorical traces that occupy the social spaces that people who are homeless inhabit. Drawing on a range of homelessness literature and public rhetoric, this paper examines the symbolic role of homelessness as it is played out via cultural objects, institutions and practices. The ways in which people who are homeless perform and enact their identities in this symbolic landscape are also explored. This paper adopts a ficto-critical approach to reflect on the materiality of homelessness as well as on the materiality of the research and writing processes involved.
