Abstract Our purpose in writing this paper is to reclaim the tradition of community-organising as an integral part of community development practice in Australia. Although there are examples of community organising by community development workers and organisations in Australia - opposing freeway development and inappropriate development, for instance - they are few and far between. In our experience in the last 20 years they have not been seen as part of the mainstream tradition of community development practice in Australia. We argue that needs to change. The 'we' in this case is a community organiser (Jason MacLeod) and a manager of a community development organisation (Catherine E. Byrne).
