This paper presents an integrated multi-objective
approach for solving the transmission expansion planning
problem considering the uncertainties associated with future
carbon emission pricing, the emission allowance trading scheme
and geothermal energy expansion scenarios. The proposed
approach determines the most economic network expansion
necessary to supply a forecasted demand for a given range of
possible CO2 emission prices while satisfying the minimum
required reliability standards under normal and N-1 contingency
The main objective is to obtain a list of transmission
expansion plans for a future network with uncertain CO2 prices.
Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA) is used to obtain
a set of optimal transmission expansion plans resulting from
minimising total cost and CO2 emissions by all generators. Two
different emission trading schemes are studied and impacts of
low, medium and high penetrations of geothermal energy on the
transmission expansion planning are investigated. The final
solution enables a transmission provider to prioritize the
expansion planning projects. The results are discussed using the
IEEE 24-bus reliability test system to prove their feasibilities.
