Editors’ Note

The Chinese is a book that leads two lives, one as a stand-alone text in college classrooms, the other as part of a telecourse package created by Contemporary Learning Systems of East Lansing, Inc. The telecourse is linked to the Emmy Award-winning public television series "The Heart of the Dragon" and includes a Study Guide for students.

In preparing this revision of The Chinese we have been mindful of its dual roles, and publication of the second edition has been coordinated with updating of the video segments by CLS and the preparation of a revised edition of the accompanying Study Guide, designed to be equally useful to both classroom and telecourse students. Inquiries about the telecourse should be directed to CLS at P.O. Box 6220, Eas1 Lansing, MI, 48826.

This edition of The Chinese also incorporates other changes: students interested in further reading in the original sources can easily identify them in a new section at the back of the book; teachers who prefer a chronological approach to the material will find a table grouping the readings by period; and a much-requested index has been included to help students and professors alike.

In the introductory essays and in the headnotes that precede each chapter, we have used the pinyin romanization system, providing Wade-Giles equivalents at the first mention of names and terms. Readings from sources using the Wade-Giles system have not been altered. In their original form, a number of the readings contain footnotes or other references which do not appear in this volume.
