Abstract/Summary This paper compares how opportunity and necessity entrepreneurs use business and social networks to support their performance. Based on these dimensions, we develop a typology of four types of entrepreneurs and compare how they perceive their performance. Our developing economy setting, which typically has higher proportions of necessity entrepreneurs, provide us with unique insights. Analysis of the data from the 404 respondents to our survey reveals a significant relationship between opportunity start-up motives and perceived performance, a result that is not repeated for necessity motives. While both business and social networks are important to performance, opportunity entrepreneurs gain more benefit from business networks. This research contributes to existing literature on entrepreneurship, network theory, and start-up motives in developing economies. It also provides practical insights on networking and perceived performance by the entrepreneur to develop relevant training, provide the relevant support on some of these issues and to enhance entrepreneurial efforts on their road to success.
