Cell-free culture supernates of Streptococcus agalactiae produced significant chemotactic responses by human neutrophils in Boyden-type assays. No clear relationship between serotype and degree of chemotaxis was seen but the cumulative data suggested that serotype la and III induced more chemotaxis than the other serotypes. No correlation with strain origin (serious disease versus carrier states) was seen. The mean response to ten samples of adult neutrophils to supernates from each of five serotype III strains was in all cases significantly and consistently greater than the mean response of ten samples of neonatal neutrophils.
