Abstract This study describes the media portrayal of the oil spiff by the container ship the Pacific Adventurer, which took place off the Queensland coast, near Brisbane, on 11 March 2009, during the state election campaign. A content analysis was applied to The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail using a sample of 80 print articles. The study identifies adversarial, episodic, and governmental frames, with political and government sources the most commonly used. Contextual information concerning socio-economic and environmental impacts was largely absent. These results conform to findings found in international studies of media coverage of oil spilfs. Furthermore, and contrary to expectations, the timing of the disaster during the election campaign appeared to have had little effect on how the disaster was reported.
