Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural forces known to humans. An earthquake has the potential to cause widespread devastation in seconds , and yet much about earthquakes' cause and effect remains a mystery. Given the extent of human civilization across the globe, and the high population densities in many regions, earthquake studies and earthquake engineering design will doubtless be areas for detailed future studies to be undertaken.
There are many potentially disasterous effects caused by earthquake motion; tsunamis, landslides, floods and soil liquefaction are among the more common. To gain a better understanding of the phenomena of soil liquefaction, experiments were carried out, whereby the effects of simulated earthquake motion on a soil sample were observed.
