This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

Our primary objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of nebulised adrenergic agonists in children (children younger than six years) presenting with acute croup (including both spasmodic croup and acute laryngotracheitis) to the emergency department or inpatient setting, in comparison with any other treatments in terms of clinical measures, hospital admission and need for airway assistance.

Our secondary objective is to evaluate the adverse effects of each intervention and assess the frequency of adverse events in children presenting with acute croup to the emergency department or hospital inpatient setting.

We will exclude epiglottitis, tracheitis and post-extubation croup from the review. We will include spasmodic croup as presentation and treatment of spasmodic croup and acute laryngotracheitis are similar and this will allow for the inclusion of studies that do not differentiate between the two.
