Abstract/Summary In temporal contextual cueing regularities in a sequence of items helps direct attention to when a response selection/decision needs to be made and facilitates performance on this task (Olsen & Chun, 2001; Mayberry, Livesey & Dux, 2010). This current study explored the influence of predicative information that appeared close in time to a target and that which appeared more peripherally (further away in time) on this effect. Participants viewed rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) streams of letters with some trials containing information prior to the target (an X or a Y that required a speeded judgment) that predicted its temporal position while others contained only non-predictive information. The first study replicated Mayberry, Livesey and Dux (2010) with all the items prior to the target, except the first in the RSVP stream and one directly prior to the target, being held constant on predictive trials. Here, contextual cueing was observed. To investigate the influence of peripheral information on this effect, the second experiment employed a similar paradigm to the first; however on all trials the 6 items (660 ms) prior to the target were non-predictive. Again, target performance was superior on predictive trials. A final experiment tested whether information peripheral to the target produced the cueing effects above or if it was due to the predictive information appearing at the beginning of the RSVP streams. Streams identical to Experiment 2 were presented to participants, however here 500 ms of non-predictive information was added to the start of each stream. Under these conditions search was not facilitated in predictive trials. Collectively, the results demonstrate that what is searched first plays the greatest role in temporal contextual cueing.
