Abstract/Summary Lowering the prevalence of at risk levels of alcohol consumption is a target of many countries around the world. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is an even more difficult but vital public health problem to address because it can have many negative effects on the unborn baby, and poses an economic burden on many countries around the world. Because of this need to investigate the matter further, the present study aimed to determine if message framing can influence adherence to recommendations to abstain from alcohol consumption. Specifically, it was investigated if neutral, negatively framed, or positively framed messages would be most effective at influencing this behaviour. A further goal of the current study was to determine if age, proximity to motherhood, motherhood identity and maternal self-efficacy were moderators in the message framing and intentions relationship. The secondary effects of message framing on maternal self-efficacy were also investigated. The results revealed a within-groups increase in intentions to cease alcohol consumption in the positively framed information condition. However, no between-groups differences were found. Furthermore, no statistically significant moderating effects were found. All information type conditions however, resulted in a decrease in maternal self-efficacy. Conclusions that can be drawn from this study are that the positively framed information condition shows promise, but several methodological improvements must be implemented in future studies to improve the findings. This study questions the efficacy of previous strategies used in health promotion and policies, and opens pathways to evaluate other positive and negative pregnancy behaviours.
