Abstract/Summary The chapter examines humour in the Japanese contemporary girls’ manga series entitled Nodame Cantabile, using three major theories. First, Honda Masuko’s study of childhood “as another culture” provides useful tools to clarify the childlike qualities of the heroine Nodame and her fellow students and mentors of classical music. Second, the rules and characteristics of the “play” identified by Johan Huizinga in his Homo Ludens are helpful to understand the playfulness as well as the serious and cathartic factors of this manga. Finally, Tsurumi Shunsuke’s theory of Ame no Uzume is used to analyse Nodame as brave cross-cultural performer/trickster. [author-supplied summary]
