Formatted Abstract/Summary
Storytelling has a well-established role in contemporary analyses of education, both as research tool and approach to teaching and learning. This paper describes an action research project that used the practice of transformative storytelling to inspire active citizenship with one preparatory class (5-6 year olds) in an Australian public school. It investigates how the language of story creates what Derrida refers to as ‘cinders’, with ongoing and recurrent effects on textual identities. Story-line analysis is used to analyse students’ spoken comments, stories and actions. The study revealed distinct patterns amidst the students’ active citizenship identities. It also underlines the limits imposed on children’s participation as active citizens within the adult model of citizenship.
