Abstract The Queensland flood disaster has left widespread property damage, with reports of claims being denied by insurance companies. In these circumstances, the no-cost Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) is a useful avenue of appeal. This article provides a brief review of previous decisions of FOS related to flood insurance. Determinations by the FOS are binding on insurers but not the insured, who can refuse the determination and proceed to court. However, these decisions will be of guidance to FOS in future determinations.
