Abstract This paper reports on an analysis of data collected through interviewing four teachers about their understandings of young people's uses of new digital technologies at home and outside school. The teachers display some understanding and knowledge of their students' access to new technologies, the skills they have developed using these technologies and the learning that occurs when using digital texts. However, it seems that these teachers cannot perceive the learning in terms of any educational affordance, or cannot see that students' knowledge of digital texts used outside of school could be useful or have any place in the literacy classroom. The paper concludes with some questions that may start teachers thinking in different ways about their incorporation of digital texts into their literacy classrooms.
