Having extracted mimesis – as the production of difference within a horizon of similarity
– from representation – as imitatio or imitation of reality – Costa Lima proceeds by
examining how this horizon is variable, dependent on the cultural and social conditions
under which it is enacted. This is a necessary, and innovative, move, which establishes
the modern efficacy of mimesis, unencumbered by its Aristotelian origins. Here the
interest of mimesis to the fields of sociology, linguistics and philosophy is acutely
