This brief text is excerpted from Mímesis e modernidade: formas das sombras (1980)
(currently not translated in English). The whole work is concerned with uncoupling the
otherwise unquestioned reduction of mimesis to imitatio. Here, in examining Mallarmé’s
“Prose pour des Esseintes”, Costa Lima identifies a distinction between what he here calls
‘mimesis of production’ from ‘mimesis of representation’. This distinction is the
necessary precondition for his later, far-reaching hypothesis as to why and how the
reduction of these two ideas came about: the control of the imaginary.
