Abstract/Summary Performance aspects of Chopin’s Mazurkas are considered from the point of view of their relationship to: characteristics of the original peasant dance forms, Chopin’s concept of rubato, and the correct interpretation of ornamentation. Early chapters establish a range of parameters relating to the concepts within which the interpretation of the Mazurkas may operate. Subsequent chapters explore the application and understanding of these interpretative limits through an increasingly detailed focus, culminating in a critical discussion of the Mazurka in A minor, op. 17, no. 4. Findings suggest ways in which interpretative freedom and originality may be tempered by a careful consideration of the parameters outlined. Both current and historical sources are considered.
