Title How dangerous is North Korea?
Abstract/Summary For 17 years, Kim Jong Il ruled his afflicted 24 million people with ruthless indifference to their suffering whilst he indulged himself in every conceivable luxury and excess. The "Dear Leader" tolerated no dissent in a country he regarded as his personal satrapy. The DPRK power eilte is extremely worried about regime stability and national survival. China provides huge quantities of desperately-needed goods to its backward neighbour and defends it against world criticism of its provocative, aggressive actions. The autocratic Kim dynasty may soon fall, though analysts predict a collective leadership with Kim Jong-Un as a notional figurehead.

Additional Notes North Korea is a harsh, tightly-regimented police state that controls all aspects of social and political life. Its military is one of the largest in the world and is growing in political power. Economic reform is impossible owing to the threat a free market would pose to the one-party dictatorship. With the death of Kim Jong Il, the family dynasty is waning in power, probably to be replaced by bureaucratic and military figures in a collective, though muddled, power sharing arrangement.
