Der Tod Jesu (The Death of Jesus) by Carl Heinrich Graun occupies a unique place in European cultural history. For 130 years after its first performance in Berlin in 1755, this oratorio was canonical throughout Protestant North Germany, its role being similar to Messiah in English-speaking countries. It was considered worthy to stand beside the greatest oratorios of Handel and Haydn. Prior to the performance with full Baroque orchestra on Good Friday, 6 April 2012 in St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane, organised and conducted by O’Loghlin, it had only been performed once in Australia, in 1893 in Melbourne, with organ. Using the best artists available and performed in a historically informed style, this performance was designed to convey the vibrancy and excitement of this great work.The text is by Karl Wilhelm Ramler (1725–1798). It is a fine example of the North German “sensitive style,” which sought to move audiences with strong emotions in music.
