Abstract/Summary A definition of pit and fissure sealant was proposed by Simonsen in 1978. He defined it as "a material that is introduced into the occlusal pits and fissures of caries susceptible teech, thus forming a micro-mechanically bonded, protective layer cutting access of caries-producing bacteria from their sources of nutrients".
