Dental practitioners may encounter patients with allergies and may themselves suffer from allegeric responses from their working environment. The aims of this article are to provide a brief review of common potential allergens in clinical practice and to provide cues for patients who may be at risk. While there are well known allergies to latex and chlorhexidine, there are many other components in dental products that practitioners may be aware of. Some of these examples include colophony resin in fluoride varnish or tea tree oil that patients may choose to use as a toothpaste.

Sensitized individuals should likewise avoid contact with known or suspected allergens in their everyday life as various agents may trigger a delayed type (type IV) hypersensitivity, which may result in a response some 1-2 days after contacting the agent. A much more concerning reaction occurs in an immediate (Type I) hypersensitivity, where the eliciting antigen which triggers explosive degranulation of mast cells in the skin and mucosa. In these cases, immediate medical management is essential. Milder reactions may be managed with corticosteroids and antihistamines.
