This performance at the Encounters Festival constituted the world premiere of three new Chinese compositions for chamber ensemble. The synthesis of Chinese and Western musical elements was a key interpretive issue in preparing for this performance.

This event facilitates the launch of the new contemporary music ensemble, The Golden Orb, which will perform in association with a visiting ensemble from the prestigious Beijing Modern Music Festival.

ENCOUNTERS: Harvest of Endurance
Date: Sunday, 9 May 2010, 4pm
The Harvest of Endurance is a collective composition commissioned by QCRC based on the fifty-metre long Harvest of Endurance Scroll (1988) by Chinese-Australian artist Mo Xiangyi. 18 of Australia’s most talented and accomplished composers (including Peter Sculthorpe, Anne Boyd, Larry Sitsky, Elena Kats-Chernin, among others) were invited to collaborate in the writing of this new iconic Australian composition. The piece was performed by The Song Company in association with The Golden Orb, a new, Brisbane new music ensemble consisting of Hannah Reardon-Smith (flute), Lloyd Van't Hoff (clarinet), Graeme Jennings (violin), Liam Viney (piano) and Vanessa Tomlinson (percussion).
