Formatted Abstract/Summary This two-piano recital in the Concert Hall of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre was designed to explore and illuminate the way composers use two pianists on either one or two pianos to achieve distinct aesthetic goals. The program contrasted one piano-four hand pieces with two-piano music throughout. The centre-piece was the rarely performed large-scale Concerto for Two Pianos by Stravinsky. The potential for higher complexity afforded by two pianos is exploited in this work, and contrasted with the preceding Rapsodie Espagnol of Ravel; written for one piano-four hands, with the pianists seated next to each other, Ravel explores more personal and intimate musical ideas in this work. This is reflected in the physical proximity of the pianists whose hands and arms literally become entangled in performance. The beginning of the program also explored these themes as the two pianists start on one piano, soon "quarrel", and have to seperate themselves by switching to two pianos. This performance was recorded by Master Performers.
