Formatted abstract The weed which nursery staff refer to as Flick Weed has usually been identified as Cardamine hirsute, also referred to by the common name Hairy Bittercress. This weed from cool, shady, moist areas is described as a winter annual in the northern hemisphere. In Australia it does not behave as a winter annual.

This study set out to reassess the identity of Flick Weed as it occurs in nurseries in 8 sites in Australia. It also looked at the reproductive potential of the plant when grown at 20, 24, 29 and 33°C. Seeds from these plants were germinated on filter papers under controlled conditions in a germination cabinet at 27/15°C.

The weed proved to be the polyploid C. flexuosa. Its morphological development showed an optimum at, or below, 20°C and dormancy was apparent in the seeds from Brisbane, especially when grown at the lowest temperature. Viability of the dry stored seed declined from 100% to 53% in 22 weeks.

The implications of these findings for current control strategies within the nursery industry are discussed.
