Abstract Increasing national and international pressures are impacting the profitability and sustainability of the northern Australian beef cattle industry. This paper discusses current and emerging challenges in northern Australia with respect to its beef industry and describes a proposed strategy for enhanced genetic improvement as a partial solution for these problems.
