Abstract In modern structures it is desirable to obtain information pertaining to performance, particularly for critical or high-value structures. For the monitoring of physical properties, both conventional electrical techniques and fibre-optic sensors are widely available; some of these are fibre-optic strain gauges (see Figure 1), pressure (see Figure 2) or temperature sensors (see Figure 3).
