Formatted abstract This thesis examines the utility of the application of the theory of affiliation developed by Mehrabian and Ksionzky (1974) to two areas of clinical significance, those of heterosexual interactional difficulties and assertive behaviour. In the first section of the introduction the three hypotheses advanced for the causality of heterosexual interactions are outlined; previous studies addressed to testing these hypotheses are reviewed and critically evaluated and the potential usefullness of Mehrabian and Ksionzky's approach argued.. The first 24 of the 25 hypotheses examined in this thesis are then presented. The last section of the introduction argues the relationship between affiliative behaviour and assertive behaviour and presents the last hypothesis of the present study. It was found the males with heterosexual interactional difficulties, as measured by the Survey of Heterosexual Interactions (Twentyman & McFall, 1975) were significantly less affiliative in their behaviour than males with fewer heterosexual interactional difficulties. The implications of this finding for both future research in the area and for counselling clients with these difficulties were discussed. The three hypotheses advanced for the causality of these difficulties were then re-examined, and an hypothesis combining features of two of these hypotheses then proposed. It was also found that negative assertion, as predicted, was unrelated to Affiliative Tendency but was related to Fear of Rejection. The implications of this finding for future research was discussed, as was the need for the development of new inventories to assess assertiveness.
