This article explores relationships between sociological theories of the “risk society” and martial arts training in New Zealand. Martial art studies provide a solution for anxieties regarding: 1) personal safety; 2) personal health and fitness; 3)lack of social solidarity; and 4) lack of meaning and purpose in life.
