Abstract A large number of antibiotics have been shown to eradicate group A beta- hemolytic streptococci from the pharynx and presumably prevent rheumatic fever. Many of them have a higher cure rate than the standard first-line therapy, penicillin. Should cost, maintenance of conventional treatment, or greater efficacy determine the clinician's approach?
