Formatted Abstract/Summary
This chapter provides an overview of the biological processes involved in alcohol consumption, particularly where intoxication is likely. Following a summary of current clinical and pharmacological definitions of intoxication and a case study on legaI definitions of both intoxication and drunkenness, we explore the known effects of alcohol on neurotransmitter systems in the brain, which are responsible for the euphoric, reinforcing, disinhibiting, and sedative effects—all features of the varying stages of the intoxicated state—and on certain hormones that can influence intoxicated behavior. We then examine the intra- and interindividual differences in how alcohol is handled by the body and its effects on a drinker's clinical manifestations. The chapter concludes with an account of current and prospective biologically oriented interventions for the prevention and management of intoxication.
