Abstract/Summary Evidence exists in the involuntary capture of visual attention that observer top down templates extend to include relational information of search targets to their surrounding environment. Conversely, competing models hold attention as being automatically guided to the most salient items in display (odd men out) engaging observers in a singleton search. A centrally supportive finding in this singleton detection account is via capture of irrelevant distractors despite their marked dissimilarity to the target. In a recent study, these capture effects have been taken as evidence observers actively tuned towards stimuli feature contrasts, upholding attention as purely stimulus driven. However findings are also consistent with the relational account in which observer attention is tuned via a top down relation set, to the relational properties of stimuli. This alternative relational explanation was tested in two experiments via modification of the originally engaged spatial cueing paradigm designed to split model predictions. Results reflected some evidence of observer tuning towards stimuli's relational properties, with implications for theoretical models discussed.
