Abstract/Summary A series of automation tools have been developed in order to assist air traffic controllers (ATOos) perform tasks, such as conflict detection and resolution. The aim of this paper is to present a model of separation assurance which describes the cognitive processes involved in conflict management, and explains the role that these processes play in workload management. The model of separation assurance is intended to be used for the design and evaluation of new conflict management tools.
