Formatted Abstract/Summary Aim of Purpose: Hand skills, the use of one’s hands to perform tasks, enable children to take part in play, learning, and social activities. Engagement in hand skill activities further promotes children’s cognitive development, emotional well-being, and socialisation. In this paper, we will be presenting the Children’s Hand Skill Framework (CHSF). This CHSF is a new empirically based theoretical framework, based on an in-depth review of the published literature and existing children’s hand skill tests, and validation from experts’ feedbacks.

Conclusions: The CHSF, including 6 hand skill categories and 18 sub-categories, can serve a basis for the evaluation of or intervention with children presenting with suspected hand skill delays or problems. The CHSF will also provide the theoretical foundation for the development of a reliable and valid test of children’s hand skills in the future.
