Formatted Abstract/Summary
Ten years after the first wave of German migrants to Australia arrived in South Australia, the country's initial German language newspaper, Die Deutsche Post für die Australischen Kolonien had been published. The history of the German press in Australia spans nearly a century and a half - a much longer period than that of any other foreign language press. This article will focus on a fraction of that large body of newspapers and will examine the extent to which it served to assertively cultivate a consciousness of a global "Germanness" in the 43 years between German unification in 1871 and the outbreak of World War 1.
