Abstract/Summary The aesthetics of the place where Grandpa While Grandpa Galdós novel (published in 1904) is in an unnamed location in September, Garci's 1998 film based on the novel is set in. Clearly the northern region of Asturias - famed for the dramatic beauty and diversity of ITS landscapes. It Seems, prima facie, as if Garci WAS closer to a Naturalist poetics than Galdós WAS when to composing this novel - more than twenty years after the publication of historical MOST Naturalist novel, The disinherited (1881). Garci's Naturalist disposition Becomes Obvious When considering even more other historical films Celebrated Start Over (1982), The Luminous Wound (1997), You're the One (2000) and Light from Sunday (2007) - all shot and September in Asturias. In These films, like in The grandfather, the natural surrounding milieu is connected to the characters Deliberately 'Personalities and Behaviour - very emphasising Often the ethical / aesthetic Contradictions Between a breath-taking idyllic landscape and a perfidious, degenerate character. In This paper, it is Suggested That Garci's cinematography can Naturalist Apparently usefully be Examined in terms of Both iconography and imagology. Iconographically, Garci's Asturias can be interpreted as realist depiction of the region and the Overwhelming Power of STIs poetic mountains, valleys and shores - a documentary-like value That Was taken by the Asturians Seriously MOST (arguably, Garci 's most enthusiastic audience). Imagologically, the Projected image of Asturias as a nature-conditioned society (Consistent with Other Realist / Naturalist images of the region, Including Clarín's La Regent and Pérez de Ayala's novels) raises problems of authenticity (stereotyping, simulacra) and branding ("Asturias, Natural paradise "is the region's tourist slogan).
