Abstract The article presents a discussion of democracy's public image in Southeast Asia. The relative success of China, democracy in Thailand are cited as factors which have diminished the appeal of democracy for some Southeast Asians. Doubts about democracy in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines are reported.
