Abstract This study used a sample of 33 schools around Australia that were identified as establishing excellent links with their local communities. Key people at each of the schools were interviewed using a questionnaire developed by the research team. A qualitative methodology was used to determine a number of common needs for schools wishing to make links with their communities. A "school-community links model" was developed that showed how schools identified the physical activity needs of students, located links within the community, and created strategies that enabled community-school links to be successfully achieved. Case studies of several high schools were used to show the strategies they used to establish school-community links .
