Ivan Crozier has done a great service in returning to historians the first English edition in all its richness. No doubt there will be an appreciative audience who will welcome Crozier’s ability to combine fine history of medicine with history of sexuality, moving away from political oriented readings of Ellis’s and Symonds’s work. Indeed, owing to the importance of the publication of Sexual Inversion in the struggle against the legal oppression of homosexuality in England, historians have paid considerable attention to this text.

In his far-reaching introduction, Crozier places Ellis’s and Symonds’s collaborative work in its cultural and social context. He addresses variations between the five different versions of the text that were published between 1896 and 1915, and reviews the historiography on Ellis’s and Symonds’s work. Crozier is mainly concerned with situating Ellis’s work within the emerging field of sexology in the late nineteenth century, and to show how both Ellis and Symonds aimed to contribute to this field.
