Formatted abstract There can be little doubt that the Bank for International Settlements has been one of the more important institutions in the international monetary system in the fifties and sixties. It is surprising in view of this fact that as yet little or no substantive description or assessment of the role of the Bank in the international monetary system has been made.

This dissertation seeks to explore the functions of the Bank with particular reference to the sixties and assess the significance of those functions in the international monetary system. Furthermore, it endeavours to discover the origins of the characteristics which endowed the Bank with the unchallenged ability to pursue these functions and questions why, in view of the creation of an alternative international financial institution, the International i Monetary Fund, at the end of the Second World War, it was the Bank for International Settlements which was forced to provide support to an international monetary system in transition.
