This study evaluates the concept of Self-Managing Work Teams (SMWT) and its application in the Queensland general insurance companies. Most studies of SMWT occur in manufacturing plants rather than service organisations and have been predominately conducted in the USA. This report fills the gap by studying the application of SMWT in Queensland general insurance companies. Interviews were conducted with Queensland general insurance companies and the Queensland Insurance Council of Australia. A survey was carried out to investigate the awareness, and the application of SMWT in Queensland general insurance companies. 23% of respondents were using SMWT and achieving the objectives of enhancing productivity and increasing employees' job satisfaction. Among the 77% of respondents not currently using SMWT, 70% of them would consider using SMWT within the next 2 years. The results demonstrated that the rate of adoption of SMWT was still very slow. Nevertheless, with the pressure of increasing interstate competition, low switching costs in changing insurance companies, the increasing expectation of consumers, and the wave of continuous improvement, Queensland general insurers should adopt a radical change through the use of SMWT to tum their organisations into more flexible, productive organisations in order to capture and/ or maintain their market share in Queensland.
