This research report investigated the need for office automation from a management viewpoint. Office automation is defined for this paper, because of the varied use and meanings given to the topic. The use and possible applications for office automation is compared with the office of today and the perceived •office of the future. Because of the interest in the company bottom line, the economics is investigated to see how it measures up to the traditional cost benefit analysis. A number of practical aspects are discussed on the need for, the implementation process and operational aspects of office automation. Primary research was conducted in south-East Queensland to seek local information on this important topic.
