Formatted abstract
Every field of economics deals with optimisation problems of some kind. Conventional methods of ordinary calculus are not always sufficient to solve these problems, and as such variational methods may be required. This thesis examines these methods, and demonstrates the advantages and limitations of applying such methods to economics with reference to two models of monopolistic profit maximisation.
