A brief outline of the factors which influenced design decisions and philosophy is given and this includes a short survey of literature in the field, and a survey of analytical techniques.

The realms of interest are defined and possible analytical models are postulated as being worthy of further study.

A heat transfer rig designed to provide the required fluid conditions is then described; the suitability of the two blowers is considered and rig performance is estimated.

A description of instrumentation follows, containing a description of a fan speed control system and a comparison of several devices for measuring tunnel throughput. A brief survey of hot wire anemometer theory is presented together with the design of a single channel constant current unit. The circuitry of a commercial two channel unit is also examined.

A programme for hot wire anemometer data reduction has been written and is described briefly.

The results of a preliminary experimental programme are then presented, and certain conclusions are drawn.
