The objectives of the project were to establish a baseline and framework for the evaluation of the library Information Desk program at Brisbane College of Advanced Education Resource Centre. The methodology followed the prescription of the program evaluation model of the New South Wales Public Service Board, which considers programs in terms of appropriateness, effectiveness, and efficiency. Program objectives were made explicit; intended outcomes specified; program strategies and non-program factors affecting the outcomes analysed; and performance indicators identified. The study then focussed on the attainment of objectives relating to "professional" service provided by the Information Desk. A transaction survey was conducted to measure the extent to which professional expertise was needed to respond to enquiries. It is intended that the information gained through the survey will guide decisions on staffing policy for the Information Desk.
