A broad overview of the housing industry and the role of the structural engineer in general and this firm in particular have been presented. A detailed examination of the costs associated with the operations and the fees charged provide the basis for the generation of a series of spreadsheets. These spreadsheets assess profitability at various levels of activity within the division. The results were compared with industry standards, and recommendations made for future monitoring. The division at present operating levels is at marginal profitability, but a relatively small increase in activity would provide a return at industry average.
Broad parameters were used to assess the market and the firm's involvement, which stands at approximately thirty percent of the available market.
