Formatted abstract       Economic analysis of environmental quality while advancing at great pace in other western countries, particularly the United States, is only in its infancy in Australia. What published Hark that is available by Australians is mainly a restatement of the general results of American studies.

      This thesis is in some respects a little different in that while there is heavy reliance on United States and United Kingdom literature (due to necessity) there is an attempt to look at the problems of aircraft and road traffic noise in an Australian context. We will have to wait until 1978 for the expected publishing of the studies connected with the Second Sydney Airport for a detailed analysis of aircraft noise in the Australian context.

      While possible policies for aircraft and road traffic noise are discussed, the major aim of this thesis is to lay a basis for future research on the economics of noise pollution. Only when we know the proper contribution economics can make in the analysis of pollution can we discuss in detail possible abatement policies. The implication of this, and of the thesis is that there is much work to be done in the area of pollution economics. The thesis simply tries to lay part of the foundations
