Formatted abstract The problem of delay to grain trucks:
In the last two decades problems of delay to farm trucks delivering grain to country depots in Queensland have gradually increased. The problems of queueing have been caused by improved harvesting techniques, an increase in grain production and by a reluctance on the part of the State Wheat Beard to vary the hours in the day their depots remain open. The resulting delay has caused farmers to incur costs of delay and double handling.

Method of solution:
Reducing trucking delays would incur additional costs for the Wheat Beard in the form of overtime to depot staff. Determining the optimum hours of operation was the objective of this thesis. A case study approach was adopted and the Gooondiwindi depot was selected for further study. The arrival and departure of trucks was simulated using queueing theory.

Recommendations:
(a) Opening times should vary according to the harvest.
(b) continuous operation throughout tile day, lunch breaks should be discontinued.
(c) Additional storage facilities cannot be economically justified.
