Formatted abstract       The prime purpose of this thesis is to postulate the relationship between communication and economic development. Because of this it might be considered a little too uneconomic for a thesis in this department. This to me is an unfortunate position to take. The pervasiveness of economics through all aspects of our lives means that we must sometimes sacrifice pure theory in order to make a study applicable to the real world. Indeed, economics, as a whole, is at the crossroads. It faces the choice of becoming overly doctrinaire and an abstraction of a very complex world, or proving its flexibility by handling, topics and situations that might have been viewed previously as being outside its scope. I prefer to see it in the latter sense, and it is for this reason that the topic is attempted.
