Formatted abstract The shared emotional attribute of emotional climate is investigated by developing a measure of perceived fear in organisations. The measure is administered in twenty sites across two organisations in conjunction with a measure of two dimensions of organisational culture drawn from Broadfoot & Ashkanasy's (1994) Organisational Profile, namely communication culture and innovative leadership culture. Results showed that climate of fear varied across sites, but not between organisations. This contrasted with the measures of organisational culture that varied between organisations. The measure of fear was negatively correlated with both measures of organisational culture. In contrast, the organisational culture measures were positively correlated. The new scale demonstrated good psychometric properties and validity.
